3 Helpful Quilting Tips Every Quilter Should Know (From Our Help Center)
May 07, 2026Over time, I’ve shared quite a few tips in the Help Center sections of my newsletters—little things that can make a big difference in your quilting.
Today, I wanted to gather a few of those in one place.
Here are three helpful quilting tips that might just save you time, frustration… or even a quilt!
Tip #1: Removing Chalk the Right Way
One of the most common questions I get is about removing chalk lines after quilting.
Here’s the most important thing to remember:
- Always test your fabric first
- Avoid heat (like ironing) unless you are sure your chalk is iron-safe
- Use a gentle brushing or a damp cloth when needed
Different chalks behave differently, so taking a moment to test can save you from setting marks permanently.
Tip #2: Getting Better Results with Stencil Marking
If your stencil lines aren’t coming out clearly, it’s usually not the stencil—it’s the technique.
Try this:
- Use a light, even pounce motion
- Don’t overload your pad with chalk
- Hold the stencil firmly in place
A lighter touch often gives you a cleaner, more accurate design.
Tip #3: Use the Right Design for Your Quilt Style
Not every stencil works for every quilt—and that’s okay.
If your quilt has a lot of movement or busy fabric, consider:
- Simpler, more open designs
- All-over patterns that don’t compete with the fabric
If your quilt is more minimal, you can go a little more detailed with your quilting design.
It’s all about balance.
A Little Help Goes a Long Way
Sometimes it’s the smallest adjustments that make quilting more enjoyable—and more successful.
I’ll continue sharing more of these Help Center tips here on the blog, so you have them all in one place when you need them.
